Hello, I have a trackerdog station in the Netherlands with the Sabueso Español a Spanish Hound with an excellent nose for tracking. My dogs are Dutch and European champion for tracks from 48 til 70 hours. I am curious if there still sabueso's in the USA, perhaps you can inform us about that. Greetings from The Netherlands.

After an excellent season of bear and moose hunting here in British Columbia the Slovenski Kopov male I got from the Czech Rep. "Mook" did very well. My father brought us a female pup "Sinti" this Summer from the Slovak Rep. and she shows promising interest in tracking as well. I have a book from Germany that is called "Die Schweissarbeit" (The Bloodwork) written by a guy that is to blood trailing in Europe what Fred Bear and Howard Hill are to archery. This book answers any questions one might have about the subject. It is just shy of 500 pages and has very nice illustrations and pictures showing the work. The authors name is Hans Joachim Borngraeber and after talking to him a couple of times on the phone he has offered to help in any way he can to promote the use of blood trailing dogs here in N. America. He introduced and helped tremendously with the training of dogs in South Africa, Denmark, Bulgaria and Romania. His work in Germany as a teacher at the famous "Hunting Castle Springe" and a dog handler is well known and respected. If we could find the right publisher to take on the project of translating (I could be of help with that) and publishing the book in English we would be way ahead in the battle of promoting the use of dogs for trailing and retrieving wounded game in N. America and other countries for that matter. If you have an idea, send me a mail: michael@going-hunting.com Smile when hunting, Michael Schneider

We have a managed private hunt club and this year our efforts have paid-off. However, our deer seem to be rather resilient, as they rarely just "drop" when shot with large high powered rifles such as 300 mags-we3 are spending hours tracking and sometimes to no avail, so we are thinking seriously about using a tracking dog. Any suggestions? thanks, julie

We have trophy managed White-Tailed Deer on our family farm for 6 years with only one lost deer. This year we lost a deer 2 days in a row....one was a 150 class deer. We need to be able to recover these animals for our paying guest and for the lucky few that I let hunt. I have 2 Lab puppies, would they make good deer dogs? A little feed-back would be nice. Oh yeah, that 150 class deer we have missing, you don't see many that size in our part of the state and I take it personally when we lose a deer. Actually, my friends call me "deer dog" because usually when we find blood it's over. How do I go about training a dog to blood trail? Thanks

I just recently lost my first buck, and was heart-broke that I could not find him after 3 days of searching over a broken blood trail. I greatly wished that I had not scorned my rabbit dogs for chasing deer, and was driven to research the possibilities of a blood trailing dog for just that purpose. Your site was very informative, and has compelled me to attain legislation here in Ohio. I have many hours of research ahead of me, and anyone with insight, advice or support can e-mail me regarding the issue. Best of luck with your dogs this season and thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

I first visited your site approx. a year ago. I found it very informative and had been using it to train my Beagle on a bloodline. With the onset of three major hurricanes the first of which was Charley, it destroyed my dogpen. Since my dog was faithful enough to hang around even though he had obtained his long lost freedom, I chose not to pen him back up. He survived hurricane Frances with me. Unfortunately, on the morning before hurricane Jeanne was to arrive a neighbor contacted me with the news that they thought they had spotted my Dog at an intersection near my home. Upon confomation that it was my Beagle, it made the impending storm even harder to bare. I want to thank you for the hours I got to spend with this Dog practicing your training methods. Hopfully one day when my heart is back in it I can begin this jounery with another companion. Thanks.

Hello from Denmark ! It pleases me no end that you have taken up tracking down injured animals and putting them out of their misery. It has been a law here in Denmark for many years that you have to report an injured animal to the police who then consult their list of authorized hunters and their dogs - schweiss dogs - and send out the one nearest to the reported accident in order to have the animal tracked down. I do blood tracking myself with my dogs if only as a sport as I am no hunter but I find it a very fulfilling sport for my hunting dogs who get to use their abilities even if they do not hunt. I see from the breeds that are listed that you use the "traditional" hunting dogs for this but why not use some of the great Nordic hunting spitz dogs? They are eminently suited for this kind of tracking. I myself have Carelian Bear Dogs but here we also use Norwegian Elkhounds, Swedish Elkhounds and Laikas.

I live a long way from NY but to support your efforts and to perhaps spark some interest here in British Columbia I will put a DSI Membership Application and a check in the mail for you. It can only be good to try. I have used Deutsch Kurzhaar for 17 years now as a Guide Outfitter and in December I brought a Slovensky Kopov pup from the Czech Republic. While hunting there I was very impressed with that breed and in Germany they (Schwarzwildbracke) are also doing very well on trials and in the field. Smile when hunting, Michael

Thanks for the site. I can't wait for next season to come around. In California, the state is broken up into zones, and the tags for the best ones are by lottery. Still, unless you know a darn nice rancher, there are lottery zones that produce 100%. Hard to get, but worth the try!

I recently had my first run in with Deer Search in November of this year. A friend of mine had hit a good buck and he hit it pretty hard, unfortunately, they bled it out and were unable to find the deer. A friend of mine told me that conservation may know somebody with dogs and I called and they gave me a number for a local deer search member. Three guys came with two dogs. They drove from over an hour away on a cold wet night to help us find that deer. Even though we were unsuccesful, I still cannot express the gratitude of how much it meant to me that someone was willing to donate their time and services to help me find a deer like that. I'm currently in the Navy and stationed in VA but you can bet that when I retire and build my home back in Upstate NY, I'll be getting involved and getting tracking dogs of my own, and try to keep on passing on the favor that was passed to me.

I live in west central Alabama and have a 6 mo. old yellow Lab (his name is Sam). He's already found 6 deer this year. 2 of the deer the hunter didn't really have a clue as to where it might be and the other 4 were already located. One of them I killed and then drug him about 80 yds. Of course Sam don't care if it is a drug out deer. He weighs close to 80 lbs now so he's a handful. Once if gets the scent of a shot deer it's amazing to see that nose hit the groundand his tail wagging sideways just a little as he moves out. I was afraid that he is too young on two of the deer as neither had any blood for about the first 250 yds out of the grass patches but I trusted his nose and finally I saw blood. Boy was I proud of that dog! This is my frist tracking dog and I hope that he stays around for a long time.

Discovered article in "Buck Masters" Magazine and was actually thrilled to know of such an organization. I've spent many hours into many evenings over the past 25 years searching and attempting to recover wounded deer for friends and co-hunters. There's no feeling as the "satisfaction" of a complete hunt when a wonded deer is located and acquired. In the same sentence, I would state there's no feeling of "emptiness" and "dissapointment" as when a deer isn't recovered primarily due to careless mistakes made by the hunter. The use of dogs should be "required" as a last resort prior to giving up the search. Take it a step further...Upon investigation, if the hunter is at fault due to non-zeroed rifle, bad judgement of shot due to distance or obstruction, etc....they should be financially fined within the hunting clubs. One thing worse than an poacher and that's the hunter that wounds a deer and spends fifteen to thirty minutes searching for it as it then interferes with their time frame to prepare and set-up for the next hunt. If you wound it, you spend the day with that deer as opposed to hunting another. Thanks, Thomas W. Cannon - Hunter, Guide, and Instructor for the State of Alabama Hunter Safety Educational Program.

loved your article in dec. 2003 issue. here where i live we can use dogs to run deer. so i've owed some pretty good hounds in the past. i've had to (more than once) track wounded deer with one of my hounds on a leash. the best track dog i ever had was a bluetick hound named cisco. you could put him on a leash, show him the place where the the deer was shot( blood or not) he would drag you to the deer. sometimes the deer was dead an alot of times they were not.but i plan on trying to train a yellow lab to do the same. i hope he will be as good or better than ol' cisco who is chasing those big bucks in the sky now. just wanted to let you know what your doing is a good think and i think you've given me some good pointers(on training the lab) from your tips sections. again thanks and keep up the good work.

I just read your article in Buckmasters about your tracking dogs. This quick and humane way of finding deer I have been doing for some 28 years. I've used about every dog thinkable in trailing down deer. At present I train and use slow trail beagles to find down game. I have videos and experience that I would love to share with you in your organization. Since I've been using beagles, 14 years now I breed and train my own dogs. I would greatly like the chance to talk with you and see about becoming and member and finder.

I recently gutshot a large buck and was unable to track and retrieve it. I wished I had a dog to track the animal. A few days later I received the December 2003 issue of Buckmaster which had an article about tracking dogs. I'd like for you to email me with information on recovering an animal which has not left a blood trail due to being gutshot. I enjoyed your article and now I intend to acquire a dog and train it for the purpose of recoving the hard-to-track animals.

He says it makes it easier. But, when he comes home with the scent of blood my dachshund goes crazy. Now, I know why. I had no idea that dachshund were also used in deer hunts. Nice website! As I am interested in teaching my dogs to track I was surfing the net for info and came across your site. I am very impressed as in this country many land owners just shoot and leave thier kills where they drop or worse leave the injured to die in the bush. after reading your site I will give thought to training my dogs to track wounded game (usualy Kangeroos), maybe then I can make a difference in my imediate area. ( when I shoot Roos it is usualy for dog food and I only ever do head shots. A miss then is a clean miss.If you have any advice in this idea I would be greatful. Regards Kevin

I think meat is unnecessary for human health but hunting is the most humane method of obtaining it. It is good that deer and bears are not left to die in the woods a slow painful death due to a mistake that cause it not to die. The bigger the horns though the more important the deer is to the group and is best left unwounded. I urge everyone to go for the young stupid deer. Please. and for DSI, the deer appreciate you.

I have found DSI very informative. I only wish I had found this web page sooner. On dec,10 I shot a 140 to 145 inch whitetail that I have looked for for three days and have found nothing but a memory. I was wondering if you or someone out there might have the knowledge of where I can find a male bloodhound already trained for blood trailing. If so contact me at the E-Mail address above. Once again I would like to say that this web page has been and I hope to continue to be very informative. Thank You.

I'd love to talk to someone about your organization live on the air... I own labs.... never used them for deer tracking ... although I can see how they might be very effective... I am in a deer club in S.E. Va.. There are a lot of lost deer due to the fact we run hounds. Not to mention just poor shooting skills. The latter bugs me the worst. However, I am currently verrrrrry intrested in starting a dog. I have raised over 75 hounds for chasing live game. I know raising a dog for this purpose will benifit me and my club, friends ect. a ton more than the 75 hounds I have started for running deer...

My son is a professional guide working for Mossy Oak here in Alabama. He just received a small terrier to use as a deer tracking dog. From all accounts, this little fellow is excellent at what he does. My son said that the breed is known as a Volce or something like that. Tried to look this up but found nothing. He said the dog is small, around 30 pounds with black curly hair and brown markings on his face.Any idea as to what it is?

Sorry about the blip. My computer went down. As I was saying, I lost the deer of a lifetime. I wish I had known about your organization then. I would gladly have paid $1000 to have been able to retreive that animal. Losing him was a terrible waste of a magnificent animal. Unless you have wounded and then been unable to find him, you cannot know how physically sick it will make you. After that experience, I made a vow that I would develop and train a dog to blood trail wounded deer. I have tried to find information on training and on breed selection but have found very lttle information. Your site is very interesting and informative. I hope to hear from your members and would be interested in their ideas regarding the best breed of dog for this task. I have a Jack Russell Terrier, but she has very little interest in using her nose to hunt. Thanks for starting this organization. I'm sure there are many grateful hunters out there whose stories had much happier endings than mine.

January 13, 2002, I arrowed my buck of a lifetime. He was a 14 point that my hunting buddy and I had seen 4 times during the 200/2001 season. I heard the deer fall about 100 yards behind my stand. eer. It was nearly dark when I got to the ground, and I couldn't find my arrow. We waited till the following morning to try to track the buck and awoke to find a biting blowing snow storm had moved in. We hunted for the deer and finally found the last 8 inches of the arrow where the buck had broken it off after falling a second time. We searched for two solid days and never found the buck.

GREAT SITE, I TRAINED A WALKER HOUND SOME YEARS BACK FOR TRAILING WOUNDED DEER. CANCER CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO PUT HIM DOWN, BUT WE HAD SOME GOOD HUNTS TOGETHER. BEST OF LUCK TO THOSE STARTING OUT WITH RETRIEVING WOUNDED GAME. IF PEOPLE WOULD SPEND TIME AT THE PRACTICE RANGE, WE PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE A NEAR AS MANY WOUNDED ANIMALS LOST.

This past season I lost two deer because of lack of blood or the weather did not permit. I also want to know if the state of Mississippi allows to use dogs on a leash to track wounded deer or how can I find out. Thanks, Joey Hill

My sons and I are avid deer hunters. Fortunately over the years we have lost only one known hit deer, but that is too many. We tried a local dog advertised as being able to track deer, but the experience was not satisfactory. The dog simply was not a tracker. I would like to train my own dog. How old is too old for a dog to begin the training process?

First of all, congratulations on doing a humane and undoubtedly a very essential job. Big Game Hunting and the use of good tracking dogs should be a hunters obligation when other methods of finding your wounded game are futile. I am retired now but my love of the Hunt and everything associated with Hunting including Dogs has not dimminished in over 45 years. You will be hearing more from me. Hi, you have very good sites! I just linked them to ours named Suomen Metsästysjäljestäjät, that means something like "Hunting Trackers Association of Finland" (it is not yet officially translated. Our association is quite new it was founded last spring (2001), but we are aiming almost same goal as you are there in States. Perhaps we can change information in future. Our sites are unfortunately only in Finnish, but we'll translate them also later in English. Best wishes to your valuable work with tracking dogs. We use to track also deers, but mainly elks and now a days also bears and boars.

Great site and most importantly, service. In a way it's a shame that it is needed, but it is great to know that many fewer deer are going to waste. Keep up the good work. If they ever entertaine the idea of allowing us to use dogs to legally track wounded deer in the mountains of WNC,I'll be there to get involved with our Black Mouth Curs. They still use dogs to hunt deer down east though. We still use them to hunt bear, hogs, coon and squirrels up here.

I really enjoyed this site. I used to have a Long-haired Daschund that was THE BEST RABBIT DOG I ever hunted with. She would out work all the beagles that ever hunted with us. She was a better jump dog and trail dog than any dog I have ever hunted with. She only barked if she actually saw the rabbit. I would be interested in a wire=haired Daschund.

I am writing to see if there is anyone interested is starting a group here in Minnesota. I've been using my dog for several years to recover deer. She is 1/2 elkhound and 1/2 beagle. She has gotten quite good and has been successful in 14 of her last 15 attempts. Some of these recoveries were very easy and I didn't really need a dog, but it is good practice for her. She is now having some medical problems. Therefore I am ready to get a puppy and would love to have another dog that is 1/2 elkhound and 1/2 beagle or bloodhound. Anyone out there have any leads on such a dog ? Thanks in Advance, Richard

Hi, In our bootleg' tracking adventures this year, Thing's aren't going well. We tracked 1 hi hit buck between lung and spine. He bled good the first 200 yards, then completely stopped. We trailed 20 hours after the hit. The buck never bedded before we lost blood. How many hi hit deer normally survive? No one has found him in the last 3 weeks. No one has seen him alive either. He was 1 of the trophies' hanging very close; locally. My other search was on a gut/liver hit. The archer was shooting re-curve with a primitive 1 blade broad head. After the hit the buck bedded 50 yds from him. He jumped the buck when searching. He called me, 4 hours later. We started searching. Where he seen the buck out of bed, the dog found blood 10 yds from that point. We searched for 3 hrs, no more visible blood, the dog was confused. 3 days' later, He found the buck 100 yds away, stinky, with buzzard's circling. I wondered how many problems you encounter when the gut's plug the in or exit wound, not allowing blood to drop, for the dog to scent? His buck died on the run. I would be glad to hear of previous experiences involving hi hit deer, and gut plugging hits. What are survival chances? My son and I shot 3 doe so far. All of them died within 100 yards, with an easy trail to follow, no dog necessary. They were good training aids! I guess nothing beats a double lung shot?
